Soloudstilling i Eks-rummet, København 2019

Solo exhibition at Eks-rummet, Copenhagen 2019
The title refers to liminal spaces where transition from one state to another or transformation is possible. The exhibition consists of tempera paintings and performance video, with icon painting as the technical starting point. Besides being eggtempera on a wooden panel, the process of painting icons can be a form of prayer and meditation, where you reach a deeper understanding of the motif. Icons have traditionally served as representations of another dimension.
Luise Sejersen considers icons as collages that can be deconstructed. In her paintings she focuses on spatial elements and certain symbols such as the halo of fire in Persian illustrations, which are similar to both sacred light and transformational fire. The paintings represent mental spaces that are open to the viewer. They refer to different historical periods of art and religion and these encounters give space for reflections on collective spiritual and mythological symbols. Symbols are also explored with the body in performance video.
The idea for the exhibition was developed during a stay at The Danish Institute in Athens in September – October 2018 where she studied pre-modern religious images from antiquity, the Byzantine period and Ottoman times.
The exhibition is kindly supported by Knud Højgaards Fond and The Municipality of Copenhagen.
